The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are a group of institutes of higher education focused on information technology. Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred to a premier public higher education institution in India by an act of Parliament of India, an institution which "serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state". Along with 23 IITs and 31 NITs, 23IIITs are belonging to INI.

Counselling into undergraduate programmes in IIITs for approximately 4,000 seats are through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority JoSAA.
